The Volcano is Alive

The Piton de la Fournaise began to seriously agitated this Wednesday, September 29, 2010. Volcano-tectonic earthquakes, 33 were recorded by volcanologists. At the same time, many landslides were noted at the top of Dolomieu. The volcano began to deform with "a tendency to inflation in the eastern portion" of the peak. Specific emissions of sulfur dioxide were also recorded. "A possible increase in the flow of fumaroles in the crater summital Dolomieu is observed" also said the observatory.

The first signs of awakening of the furnace had been rated by the Volcano Observatory Saturday, August 14. The agitation had remained constant and Monday, Sept. 6, the prefecture had triggered the alert level of volcano terms. The probability of an eruption had been further strengthened Friday, September 24. The magma started to rise towards the surface. Swelling "sensitive" of the peak was recorded. The prefecture was then triggered an alert indicating that an eruption is imminent. Access to the enclosure was closed to the public.Saturday, September 25 but a decrease in seismic activity was recorded and the warden raised the alert level 1. It also authorized the reopening of access to the paddock and the track leading to the observation point of the crater Dolomieu. This authorization remains valid for the moment.
The last eruption of Piton de la Fournaise was held from 2 to 12 January 2010.
